How Deep Is Your Love?

How Deep is Your Love. You would think the song title would help you assume what the music video would be like. I thought the video would be about someone loving another but it is far from that. The focus of the video is a young woman who is very beautiful. The video starts on a girl who seems to be dead but suddenly wakes up then travels from party scene to party scene.

These places are filled with different types of people young and old, male and female. The video uses different scenes and lighting to draw attention to the woman who is the focus of the video. Strobe lights help catch the eye in transition from place to place but no specific color is used. The woman starts in white clothing possibly showing new life, as that is also when she wakes up. Then she quickly transitions into normal clothes when put back into the real world.

The light and color changes go along with what is talked about in the Golombsky and Hagen article. Different color used for her clothing and the lighting is bright to help draw attention to different parts of the video. These lighting changes and different colors of her clothes help provide insight into the deeper meaning of the video, which I will discuss a little later.

I believe the title of the music video is related to the woman love for life. She wakes up from the dead wanting to continue to live. She at first is confused by how she is awake but quickly adapts into the world by having fun and getting lost in the party scene. Touching on the new life aspect I stated earlier, she possibly could have been “reborn” to live life to its fullest and not waste it the second time around.

Also in the video there are many different cases of male gaze as we spoke of in class and other aspects from the Rakow article. The first is seen in the first place the main woman appears. It seems to be a nightclub that has exotic dancers all over the place. The exotic dancers show a lot of skin while dancing on poles and this could be used to attract male viewers to the video. This was the first experience with male gaze.

The second showing of male gaze was when the main woman comes out of a pool in a wet dress with a swimsuit underneath. The camera pans to a man looking intrigued by her. But she then takes of the wet cover up dress to reveal her swimsuit. So she is accepting this gaze and wants it. It then goes into a shower with her in a swimsuit. However, this time the male gaze shows that she wants it. She is accepting her beauty and is going to use it in a positive way for herself.

After she accepts the male gaze and possibly even wants to attract it, she seems to live life more freely. She is not timid like at the beginning of the video. She goes out and enjoys the parties and enjoys all of the fun that life is presenting to her. She is taking advantage of her new second life.

My thoughts are that the video is sending two separate messages. The first of the messages is that once you accept yourself and what life gives you, you are able to enjoy life more. This is shown as she accepts how attractive she is and that men will stare at her but she doesn’t let it affect her and uses it to make life more fun.

The second message is that when life gives you a chance you should take it and not be scared. If you sit back and do not enjoy what life is giving to you, you could miss out on all of the fun things that are going on around you. The woman finally opened up and enjoyed her life much more.

Overall, the video incorporates different symbols and story lines to get across the deeper messages. They use white, different lighting, and feminist aspects to help pull the video together and give it meaning that could be good life lessons. This video shows how different design and video techniques can create a story that could not be shown without them.
